Located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Art Cake is a new organization dedicated to providing space for production and opportunities to explore creative practices. It features a multi-room exhibition and event space that can accommodate a wide variety of events, from art exhibitions and installations, to film shoots, lectures, and dinners, on the ground floor and a complex of affordable artist studios on the second floor. The revenue generated from renting the ground floor allows Art Cake to maintain a self-sustaining model in support of artists working in New York City.

BioBAT Art Space cultivates relationships between artists, the community, and future generations of innovators BioBAT Art Space is pleased to present Common Frequencies, an exhibition that brings together the works of Lorena Mal, Marcela Armas, Gilberto Esparza, Tania Candiani, and Interspecifics, and curated by Elisa Gutierrez Eriksen. The work of these Mexican artists meets at the intersection of art and science, and explores the relationship between these two disciplines through sound, urban ecology, language, and the construction of collective imageries. The artists—working across performance, installation, photography, sound, and drawing—are inspired by resonance, mechanics, electricity, and magnetism and take these phenomena as the basis for the invention of mechanisms that give voice to nature.

Household Requiem is a collaboration between Mexican artists Tania Candiani and composer Rogelio Sosa with the Grace Chorale Brooklyn, to be presented in the framework of the Common Frequencies Exhibition at BioBAT Art Space in Brooklyn. For one weekend only, Chashama’s studio hub at Brooklyn Army Terminal is open to the public! Explore new works from 117 visual artist studios, interact with our talented studio artists, and wander through this historic Brooklyn Army Terminal during our Open House New York. This event is done in tandem with Open House New York and NARS Foundation’ Sunset Park Wide Open. Many arts organizations from across the neighborhood will be hosting events and Open Studios, so plan on spending the day and exploring the neighborhood.

As part of the Sunset Park Wide Open Event, NARS is pleased to present Bubble Orchestra, an exhibition curated by Precog Magazine at the NARS Main Gallery, and with works by Adeniyi Ololade, Patricia Dominguez, Carlos Franco, Amiko Li, Alison Kuo, Umber Majeed, Anjuli Rathod, Ben Ross Davis, Virtual Dream Center, and Blinn & Lambert. On Nars Project Space, NARS will present “Spatiotemporal Invaders” by Jeremiah Teipen. The exhibitions will be on view from October 15th to November 5th, and with an Opening Reception on Friday 10/15, from 6-9 pm.
Additionally, the NARS Season IV Residency Artists, and Studio Relief Program artists will open their spaces to the visitors.

Target Margin Theater is a multi-OBIE Award-winning theater company based in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, founded on the principle that works of art return us to real truths most powerfully by their divergence from a strict illustration of reality. Over the past 30 years, we have energized the cultural landscape with innovative, experimental performances of classic plays, opera, literature and historical sources, continuously seeking to expand our conception of what can take place in a theater.
Led by Sarah Bitar and Rawya El Chab, Variations on “Exercises in Style” is a two day theater workshop for BIPOC youth that invites them to create a variation on the play by Raymond Queneau of the same title. On our first day we will introduce the participants to a variety of theater tools and exercises, from the Viewpoints Method, the Theater of the Oppressed, Kristin Linklater voice & speech, etc. On the second day we plan to develop our own take on the play and come up with a flow of theatrical tableaux. We will open our doors at 2pm on October 17th for visitors to come witness our explorations.
About the artists:
Sarah Bitar is a trilingual actor, vocalist and activist from Lebanon. She graduated from the Stella Adler Studio. She utilizes her craft in acting, teaching and devising to create compassionate dialogue that explores the different facets of the human social experience. Credits include: Glimpse; Revolucion (Rattlestick Playwrights Theater); Hail Elisha (LAByrinth Theater Company).
Rawya El Chab is a Brooklyn-based theater-maker from Lebanon. Her career trajectory combines training and experience in classical theatre, contemporary art performance and community engagement. Her work emphasizes the development of ludic practices and the democratization of the tools of theater as a means to dismantle modes of oppression.
